Ocean of Chaos...

It has been such a roller coaster ride the past week with our sweet canine Lacy. I would give anything to be able to just take this dog myself, but that unfortunately cannot happen. Last weekend, my Mom came in town bringing along "Little D" her sweet golden from home in Kentucky. Little D loved coming to Atlanta and she is such a cutie pie. She rides in the car just like a person- it's so funny! She loved Lily & Daisy, but they were not so sure about her. Poor Daisy ran underneath the bed meowing the whole way there and Little D followed her to peak under the bed. She loves felines and kept crying when Lily would get close. Poor Little D just wanted to play with the girls, but they did not quite understand that.

All in all we had a very nice time with Mom in town and we headed to Maggiano's for dinner last Friday night. It is one of the best, in my opinion, Italian restaurants here in Atlanta. So yummy! Mom also got to meet Lacy and she absolutely fell in love with her. We took Lacy for a walk on Saturday morning and Mom said that if she didn't have Little D, Indy (family beagle), and Casey (the only feline) she would take Lacy in a minute. If only Lacy was not dog aggressive.

Mom and Lacy after our walk sans make-up!

On Sunday morning after Mom and Little D left, I took Lacy for a very long walk because it was supposed to rain the rest of the day and I thought Lacy needed to expend some energy. Well about halfway through our walk, I felt a car pull up to us and stop. Now, I make sure that when I walk I always have my cell phone with me just in case of emergency, but on this morning I didn't think anything about it because it was so misty and figured I didn't need it. Anyway, as the car pulled up to me I looked over and saw a black woman saying some funky name to Lacy. I stopped and ask her what she needed and she said some nasty expletives to me saying, "That's my dog, expletive." I stopped mid tracks and said, "No, this is our dog, she's a rescue" upon which time I kept walking but felt this woman following me. She was driving in the direction Lacy and I were walking and she turned her car around in the middle of this busy road and jumped out and tried to attack me and steal Lacy claiming that I stole her dog. Seriously, me stealing a dog = yeah right. Anyway, I can't even write about it in detail because it was so awful and frightening. Poor Lacy was scared to death and cowering behind me and I was basically chewing this woman out and I finally told her that if she touched me, I was calling 911. Needless to say at that point, she got back in her car WITH her kids and drove off. No one stopped to help or do anything. I was a wreck to say the least.

So after getting accosted, I know carry pepper spray with me and always have my cell phone in hand. I took Lacy to the vet yesterday for her booster shots and our vet is just a gem. God love her for all she's done for Lacy and giving us a cut on the costs. Dr. Levinson told me that with pits, there are many classes of people who want these pits for the wrong reason (dogfighting) and you just have to be so careful. Obviously: don't walk her at night, always carry pepper spray, etc., etc. So needless to say it's been a whirlwind of a week getting her back on schedule and then to add to the fact that she jumps her fence twenty times trying to get out to follow me home. It just breaks my heart because I want to just take her in, but I can't. I'm also trying to get the owner, Elizabeth, to sign all our documents which surrender Lacy to us for all her upcoming medical procedures (surgery-spay) and that is an issue in itself. Elizabeth's house was broken in to on the Friday night my mom came in town, so she hasn't been back yet. It's enough to make your head swim!

On a positive note though, my sweet Aunt Karen (who is a scientist at the CDC here in Atlanta) placed Lacy's picture and story up on their listserve and I received an email this morning from a lady that is interested in Lacy. Thank you Karen!!! We're hoping that it all could possibly work out. Thank you God and thank you Karen for all you've done!! I prayed more last night for little Lacy and a potential home than I have in a long time. One of the ladies Jeff works with, Becky, also sent us a large bag of dog food and large bones for Lacy. She is a gem- thank you SO much Becky!!

I've also contacted Brandon Bond who is a well-known tattoo artist here in Atlanta that is the founder of Atlanta Pit Bull Rescue here in Atlanta. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and praying hard that they could take Lacy. He took in a couple of the Vick dogs. Please see his video below. Keep Lacy in your prayers for finding a good home!

Lastly, here is a sweet picture of Little D and my golden Dixie from last weekend. Golden love....

Newfound Running Buddy

Well Miss Lacy is officially attached to me at the hip every night after I head over to Jeff's to take her for either a long run or walk. I basically switch off every night between running/walking. I knew from the beginning that she needed lots of exercise and our vet, Dr. Levinson, told us as well that exercising Lacy is one of the best outlets for her physical health as well as teaching her how to become socialized in the outside world. So, I have been running/walking her every night for the last week and she is doing GREAT!

She honestly is one of the smartest dogs I've ever met in my life and picks up on new commands instantly. On Sunday night, I had just gotten off the phone with my best friend from home, Kali, and I heard knocking on the door. Dixie who is spoiled like no other, was sitting on the couch and began to bark. So I looked out the front windows and no one was in the driveway, but then I heard it again. So I went and opened the door only to find little Lacy smiling up at me. She's so smart, she's jumping her fence and coming to knock on J's door. :) Bless her heart!

The running is great exercise for us both, but let me say that I am sore like non other! I've always been a runner, but trying to keep up with this canine is like trying to run beside a car. She seriously probably can run 20 miles an hour. No joke- it's amazing & I immediately had to head out to Target to buy her a new and sturdy leash after the first night we walked.

Jeff headed down to Florida for his family's annual camping trip last Saturday morning and I was supposed to go, but I just could not bring myself to leave Lacy (even though she still lives in her backyard) for the entire weekend and up until today. I knew I would be worried about her the entire time and it was actually very nice to sit back and relax for one weekend. I ended up staying at Jeff's house the entire time because after trying to bring Dryfus (his german shepherd) over to my house to stay, it didn't work. He continously barked & poor Lily/Daisy thought I'd brought home another animal. So Dixie, Dryfus and I vegged out on the couch and I took Lacy for some nice long walks. It was a great weekend!

Lacy has now decided though that after every walk, she wants to follow me back to Jeff's house, which she inevitably probably believes is my house as well. After I let her through the fence into her yard, she'll jump the fence a hundred times to come sit on his front porch. It absolutely breaks my heart & last night I decided to try to let Dixie (my golden) out to see how they would respond to each other. I had Lacy by the collar and opened the door up slightly so she could see Lacy. Dixie, in pure golden sweetness, was wagging her tail and smiling but as soon as Lacy saw
Dixie, all bets were off. She started growling and I immediately pulled up on the collar and yelled "No" trying to explain now why she cannot come in the house. So we're still working with her and eventually we're going to try to walk Dixie and Lacy next to each other so she can understand that all dogs won't hurt her. You can't blame her though, who would want to live in a backyard all alone?

This rehabilitation is a process and as much as I want to swoop her up into my home and away from all the sadness/neglect she has come to know, I know I can't. She is a pit bull and with this breed comes great responsibility. I'm learning and hopefully in time, she will be able to live among us. On a happier note, I'm taking her back to the vet next week for her booster shots and here are some hilarious pictures of her in the car. That's her new favorite thing-riding in the car. :)

Loving the car...Did not want to get out. :)

Lacy's First Vet Visit

Well I took Lacy to her first vet visit with Dr. Levinson on Monday afternoon. We were not sure exactly how she would fare because she has never been to the vet and really has never been outside of her backyard until she met us. She did fabulous & everyone just ohhed and awwed over her! She was very nervous at first but then warmed up to the entire staff. Dr. Levinson thinks she is about 2-3 years of age and she is in very good health for all she's been through. No heartworms thank goodness but she does have fleas and ticks, so we started her on Interceptor to battle these parasites. She did great for her shots and vaccinations, and only flinched a bit.

I've been heading over to Jeff's house every night to get Lacy out of her backyard and with me to run errands or exercise. It's a good way to help her become socialized and get some exercise. However, I have become so attached to this dog that it's going to be VERY hard for me to say goodbye when we find her a forever home. Last night after I took her to Krogers with me to pick up some items I needed and a large bone for her, she decided that she would jump out of her gate and come sit on Jeff's front porch after I had taken her home. She sat at the door and waited for me to let her in. Not just once, but 5 times. It's obvious that she wants to live with us and it absolutely broke my heart. I really just want to take her into my home and get her a crate to keep her in while I'm gone.

My dad also drew up ownership surrender documents for the owner to sign as well today. I am going to try to get her to surrender her to us so we can find her a good home. The last day and a half, I've been emailing rescues to see if anyone has room for Lacy in the southeast. I've gotten a couple responses and one of the sweet girls I spoke with told me NOT to turn Lacy over to Pit Prints in Canton, GA because the girl has been linked to dog fighting and euthanasia. So needless to say, I was working with her and immediately sent her an email explaining that we wouldn't need her help anymore. Can you believe that? This all is just making me so nervous and it makes me wish we could keep her even more.

So that's the latest on Miss Lacy. We love her dearly and the bond I'm forming is growing exceedingly fast with her. Jeff says I need to scale back, but that's just too hard for me. Until next time, happy Friday!!!

Happily Settled

Well after a rigorous and daunting challenge of finding homes for our sweet pit puppies, I received an email yesterday afternoon from Atlanta Humane Society stating that they would LOVE to take our puppies in and find them homes. I about fell out of my chair with shock and happiness because we'd received so much feedback from rescues and people stating that they had no room for our pups. All of the hard work Friday night, Saturday and Sunday certainly paid off.

I ended up taking the day off today and Jeff and I headed downtown to take our five little faces to AHS. When we got there it was such a relief to know that they were receiving vet care immediately as we checked each one in, but so sad to leave them. The last one clung on to me and it made me almost cry. I have become so attached to these sweet canines, that it was hard to let them go, but wonderful to know that they will have their second chance at life which is something WE & AHS did for them. Their owner would have let them die in their backyard.

As we were waiting with each pup, we met a young guy and his mom who were basically doing the same thing we were. He lived in Decatur which is an area of Atlanta, and he has neighbors who have three female dogs and one male, all of which are unaltered. So he had seven pups with him today and had found homes for others. The poor guy has his hands full.

After we got home, we headed over to Lacy's house to clean up her backyard (well Jeff did that) and I took her for a nice long walk. She was so very excited and we are going to exercise her everyday until we can get her spayed. As soon as Jeff and I left her with her bone, we turned around and she had followed us back. She was saying, "I want to live with you guys!!!"

Little Lacy and I...Can you see how much of a mess the backyard is? Some people shouldn't have animals, much less children.

Puppies for Adoption- Please Help!!

Hi everyone,

This post really is about finding homes for an impoverished neighbor's dog's puppies. One of Jeff's neighbors has a sweet female pit bull, Lacy, who has had her second litter of puppies. Lacy has never been taken care of- not the way we take care of our animals since I first saw her back in April of 2009. She's left alone in her backyard with only a shed to take refuge in. No love, attention or happiness to surround her.

In the beginning of May of 2009, I contacted Animal Control in attempts to help Lacy due to pure neglect, but when that proved futile, I spoke with the owner herself this morning to try to help the puppies find a home and have Lacy spayed on our dime.

The owner is a young Hispanic girl around 21 years old. She has a family and they are very poverty stricken. I forget how lucky I am to have the family I'm blessed with and the financial stabililty some people don't have. Her name is Elizabeth and she started crying when I offered to help them find these pups good homes. We have placed warm beds in the shed as well as lots of dog food for these sweet canines, and now we are trying to find them homes. They were born on Halloween, so they are approximately 3 months old & they are cuties!

If you are interested in adopting, please email me back at morgan720@yahoo.com or call my cell: 404-851-1790. We are not charging a fee, we just want them to have good homes with lots of love and the proper care. They are forced to live without attention, love and in the freezing temperatures right now.

We are working with our Vet to have them dewormed and ready to go. Please pass this along to anyone you know looking for a sweet pup. Pit bulls really and truly are sweet animals. If I could take another dog, I would take Lacy as I have become so fond of her, but financially I am unable as I have 3 animals already. Pit bulls have such a negative stigma associated with them, but with love and the proper care they are the most loyal and caring breed you'll ever meet.

Please see the pictures below or you can click on the following link to see them on facebook. I didn't post all the pictures on here because my computer runs so SLOW.

Happy to be in the arms of a human..Can you imagine what it must be like to live in 18 degree weather with no one every swooping you up to give you love?

All of them are so sweet and cute. It breaks my heart they're living in this condition, which is why we're taking action and trying to find them homes..

My personal favorite. He loves for me to pick him up and rock him. I'd give anything to take him!
