The Price of Fur

There are no laws to protect animals who are raised or trapped for fur. To kill animals without damaging their fur, trappers usually strangle, beat, or stomp them to death, and some are even skinned alive or have their throats cut while they are still conscious. The only way to stop this cruel & unspeakable horror is to NOT buy fur of faux fur.

China supplies more than half of the finished fur garments imported for sale in the United States.

Pledge to go fur-free at PETA.org.

Don't BUY your pet, ADOPT instead!

I drove in from Kentucky yesterday afternoon where I had a wonderful time visiting family and catching up on some Christmas shopping. I arrived in Kentucky Thursday morning after a 6 hour drive "dog less" since Dixie opted to stay with Jeff. Mom had fixed some amazing lasagna, yummy garlic bread and Caesar salad for dinner that night. Jack and I ate it up! There is nothing like home cooking to go home to. On Friday, I ended up running Jack to the doctor and back to school to check his shoulder which they thought he dislocated at his last game. He was so excited to be able to play and little do you know it, he sprained his ankle that night. He's an awesome football player though & I keep hoping he'll be able to play for Georgia so he'll be down here by me!!

But all in all I had a wonderful visit. I got some great food with the fam; got my hair cut and colored, and caught up on some much needed Christmas shopping Saturday morning! Mom and I were shopping downtown and I was trying on outfits at a local boutique when I came out and Mom was looking at a coat with fur lining. I about died right there and said, "What are you doing?" and immediately she said, "It says it's fake." And there in lies the problem with fur. The truth behind so called "fake" fur is that there is a loophole. So you are really buying fur that was created by skinning alive an animal. The truth behind fur is horrific and needless to say I offended the sales lady when I said, "Do you know where that fur came from?" Needless to say Mom won't ever buy any thing with fur on it. Click here to read more about this.

Then, when I was headed over to Jeff's house last night I saw the same house selling daschund puppies for the 4th time this year. I stopped and talked to the guy just so I could see the condition of the mom and dad. They were in okay condition, but I'm going to talk to my vet and most likely give animal control a call. It broke my heart to see the mom and dad fenced up. I just wanted to ask him how much he wanted for them. Ignorant fool!!! Anyway, needless to say, I've been reading up on breeding laws. I don't know why people won't STOP buying pets and start adopting. Or stop buying clothing with fur!

Season of Giving

There are just so many people in need throughout the year but it always seems to me that this need intensifies as the holiday season approaches. Last night on the news I saw a story about the Georgia SPCA which is close to shutting down because of low funds and a plethora of animals that need homes. I immediately sent out an email this morning and placed it on my facebook page so that animal friendly friends can help out. If you would like to see the video click here and if you are interested in adopting any furry friends from the Georgia SPCA, click here. There are lots of sweet & precious faces that need a good home and they are in dire need of monetary funds!

In other non-related animal news, I finally finished buying items for my shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. I love putting these together and I found the cutest gift of all at Cracker Barrel last Saturday morning when Jeff and I were waiting to be seated for breakfast. Cracker Barrel had all of their Christmas items out and I bought two cat stuffed animals that are dressed in Santa outfits. The best part is that they sing "Jesus loves me" when you push on the belly. I thought they were perfect for the shoe boxes and Jeff got a kick out of them!

This is everything I ended up buying....

I ended up going ahead and putting my Christmas tree up Sunday night when I got home from Jeff's house because Dixie and I were taking a walk and I ended up seeing some Christmas trees already decorated and up in some houses. I love the Christmas season & it's hard to believe that it will be Thanksgiving in two weeks!

In previous years I would put up my fake tree, but Lily & Daisy decided that the tree was a playhouse for them and it has too many holes now to look pretty. So needless to say, I have retired that tree.

Dixie tagged along on Sunday to watch Jeff play soccer with his team and she got a great workout, but she wasn't so interested in the game. By the time she got back to Jeff's house, she crashed.

Not excited about having her picture taken at all....

And one last picture to leave you with--the felines relaxing..

A Happy Ending...

Well we had a very happy story emerge from a very sad and long drawn out animal abuse (neglect) case in Jeff's neighborhood. One of Jeff's neighbors, whom I have talked about before had a sweet boxer that he kept out in his filthy yard and he was never EVER home. The guy literally came in once a week, if that, to check on his house. So I saw this poor boxer probably a month and a half ago and my mind was never the same. Jeff & I have been battling with Cobb County Animal Control ever since, and let me say they were completely useless. We called AC on the guy immediately and they did nothing to help the sweet boxer. They told us that as long as she wasn't starving, they really didn't care if he was never home.

Once AC came out, the owner told AC that he worked very long hours and that is why he was never home and AC believed him. So after repeatedly calling AC, I turned to my own measures. I contacted the Cobb County Humane Society Board of Directors and they came out to see the yard. They were horrified as well and put in another call to AC, but no results ever came of it.

About a week ago I decided that it was time to put aside my feelings for the animal abuser and try to reach out to him for the boxer's sake. So I left a very nice note in his mail box and waited for him to contact me. I basically told him my name and stated that I would like to help him with his boxer or the other option of relinquishing the dog to me. Well nothing ever came of this and last Saturday on Halloween, I saw the owner come in. Poor Jeff was on the couch sleeping soundly because it was such a nasty rainy day and I woke him up to tell him that I was heading over to confront the abuser. I literally ate the guy alive and I was just waiting on him to pull out a gun and shoot me, but at that point I didn't really care because all the neighbors and Jeff were watching. He had no defense and at the end of my conversation he asked me if I wanted the dog. That's what he called his precious boxer, "the dog." So I immediately said "yes, of course" expecting to have the boxer handed over to me immediately and he told me to give him a day.

I stormed off furious at that point with all the neighbors watching and what drives me crazy about the majority of our population is that they don't want to get involved to help others or even animals in distress. They love to watch and see what happens, but they don't CARE enough to pick up the phone and make a call, or walk over to help a neighbor in need. Most people are inherently selfish and immune to others' needs. I just wish more people cared, but what I've grown to learn is that you can't make that happen.

So after the argument, the abuser drove off and my hopes of saving the boxer were dwindling. I felt like it was my last ditch effort. We had a very nice Halloween, but every time I'd go outside, I heard her poor cries sting through the air. It just broke my heart. Then on Sunday afternoon around 1pm, Jeff looked out the window and told me that the abuser was outside on the phone pointing at Jeff's house. So I told Jeff that he was probably calling the police on me, and I immediately began looking out the blinds to see what he was doing. He walked in the house and came out with the boxer and my spirits instantly lifted. He parked in front of our house and he told us that his ex wife wanted to adopt the dog from him and we had a decent conversation (Jeff is super sweet ALWAYS) with him.

He went on to tell us his sob story which is no excuse for why he's left a 2-year-old boxer in his backyard neglected for Lord knows how long, but anyway I was nice and told him that he was doing the best thing for her. I was amazed that he actually was doing something to help her and in my heart, even though I really WANTED the boxer for us, I knew that she was most likely headed to a happy home. I can't imagine any mother taking poor care of children or animals. He went on to explain that he told his wife that if she couldn't financially or physically provide for her, to bring the boxer back to us and we would keep her.

We shook hands and told him that he was doing the right thing, but as they drove off I was mixed with emotions. I saw her sweet face and it made me sad because I wanted her for us, but I was also happy that she was headed to a good home. I'll never have to hear her sad cries and look into those lonely eyes who only wanted love. I'm happy she is out of her Hell and living a better life. And maybe, just maybe, we'll see her again one day.
